Re: Internal links redirection and Sitemap?
I'd submit only the new sitemap, and let old stuff take care of itself.
Your 301 redirects shoudl help with that.

Can you be a crorepati? Find out
Sanjay Matai, Moneycontrol.com |
If you are not born rich or if you do not possess the extraordinary talent or super intelligence that can make you rich, then welcome to the real world. Like most people in the world, money comes to you through certain other qualities, some you are born with and some that you can develop.
Do you have what it takes to become rich? Do you have the qualities that can take you to that goal? Take this test and find out. Answer each point in 'Yes' or 'No'. Count how many answers are in 'Yes' and how many in 'No'.
1. You have a broad financial road map defining you assets, liabilities and financial goals till say the age of 80-85.
2. Your first priority is save at least 10-15% of your income every month, without fail.
3. Your second priority is pay off credit card bills on the due date and not carry forward any outstanding balance.
4. You believe that investing is not a 100m race, but a marathon.
5. As they say death and taxes are inevitable; so is risk. Thus you learnt to proactively deal with risk rather than try to run away from it.
6. Term Policy and/or Mediclaim are the only insurance policies you have ever bought and are extremely allergic to Endowment, Moneyback, ULIP kind of policies.
7. You have never had to borrow money for any emergency.
8. Home Loan is the only loan you have ever availed.
9. You are as comfortable with interest rate jargon such as flat rate, monthly-reducing, zero-interest, advance EMIs etc., as you are say with slip, gully, mid-wicket, cover and so on.
10. You would rather give Rs.100 to a beggar, than to go and buy a lottery ticket.
11. You are a fair-weather friend of your investments - you dump them if they fail to meet your expectations.
12. You do not lose sleep when you lose money.
13. You do not get carried away by media hype about some investment opportunity; but first.read the fine print - the so-called 'Conditions Apply'.
14. You would have your weekend dinner outing in a small and decent joint rather than in a 5-star hotel; you don't splurge cash and are always on lookout for a discount/bargain offer.
15. You never invest in something you do not understand or are not comfortable with.
16. You buy your luxuries out of the returns from your investments and never from your current income.
17. You believe that hot tips, more often than not, burn a hole in your investments.
18. Budget for you is not just what our Finance Minister presents every year.
19. The allocation of your investments across various assets such as equity, debt, savings a/c, etc. is a true reflection of your financial profile.
20. You are not planning to go to Europe this summer, just because your neighbor Mrs. Showoff went for one last year.
21. You have never paid any penalty for not maintaining the minimum balance in your bank account.
22. Just as you don't like to sit idle, you don't let your money also sit idle for long in your bank account.
23. You feel sorry when you see thousands of investors naively putting thousands in the New Fund Offers.
24. You laugh every time you see a Mutual Fund proudly announcing a huge dividend payout.
25. Just as Sachin began his cricketing career at 16, you too began your investing programme when you were in your teens/early twenties.
If you have answered 'Yes' for 20 or more of the above, congratulations. You have a very bright chance of becoming a crorepati (millionaire).
But if the 'Yes' answers are less, then the road ahead is tough for you. Study the points where you said 'No'. These are not just statements. They carry a very important financial meaning. Try to understand these and convert them into Yes - through financial discipline.
So don't just dream - act - and you could also become a part of the rich elite. After all, patience, persistence and commitment are what it takes to get there.

Re: what is my problem with sitemap
Page rank has nothing to do with sitemaps. Page rank is based on
quantity of backlinks to your web page. The mroe external sites link
to yours the better.
A page rank of 3 isn't bad in fact. It's average. High or low pagerank
has no bearing on how easily the site is found and how high up in the
results pages your site comes for any query.
Sitemaps are uses to help Goglebot crawl and index your site properly,
in an orgnaized manner. They cannot perform miracles. For crawling and
indexing to benefit from Sitemaps submission your site has got to be in
very good shape code-wise.

Re: Unsupported file format
www.eastgatecottages.co.uk/sitemap.xml looks OK,
maybe the error message refers to an older version of
your sitemap and it takes a while to update.
As the other postings to this thread mentioned,
it is good that you have the full header
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<urlset
xmlns="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84"
xmlns:xsi="http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema-instance"
xsi:schemaLocation="http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84
http://www.google.com/schemas/sitemap/0.84/sitemap.xsd">
also you do not need both urls
http://www.eastgatecottages.co.uk/
and http://www.eastgatecottages.co.uk/index.asp
(obviously keep http://www.eastgatecottages.co.uk/ )

Map has no properties
Hi:
I'm new to JS and to the Google Maps API. But I'm trying hard to
learn......
I want to do something very similar to
http://www.geocodezip.com/basic8l.asp?filename=example_number.xml
I want numbered icons, with a list in a sidebar. So I copied his code,
and worked from there, off of my server. I changed locations and did a
new .xml file.
His code was in Version 1, so I switched it to V2.
Now when mine loads, it fails to load the markers or the side bar html.
http://kubuildingtech.org/maptest7b.html
JS console in Firefox gives me a "map has no properties" message. When
I look at the original code, I can't tell where he specified his map
"properties".........
Can someone please advise me what I'm doing wrong? I'm totally stumped.
Cheers (and thanks!),
Smed

Re: We should look for / & /default.asp
Hi Earl
It won't kill you :-)
Google will filter those duplicates out; Google finds lots of
duplicates and has to work those out (eg http://server.com/page and
http://server.com/page/ ). However, it might be spreading the value
when it could be concentrated - you can really see that with a PR
tester, check the different variants of your URLs and see how they have
different PR values. By making sure that you have them all the same,
you're actively working against that. There is a .htaccess modification
which you can use to automatically 301-redirect all accesses to
"/index.htm" (or whatever) to "/", if you want it, let me know (I'll
start digging :-)).
http://seside.net/google/2005/10/23/pr-for-me-not-my-site
It's also possible that Google will handle those issues with one of the
next updates, who knows. But if you're going to pay attention, you
might as well clean it all up anyway :-)

Problem with Sitemap Generator
Could someone please help me out here. I used the generator to crawl
all my pages using the "access log" feature. And it came back with
like 14,000 pages. most of them need to be indexed. The problem is that
the generator automatically added "amp;" to most of these thousands of
URL's.. The URL's do not work correctly with the "amp;" in there. So
i need to remove every instance of "amp;" within the URL's, for the
URL's to work correctly.
Could someone tell me how to resolve this issue. There was a program
out there that could remove hundreds or thousands of instances of a
particular word or phrase with a click of a button...aslong as you
defined the word or phrase. WordPad and NotePad can only do them one
at a time. So it would take me like 2 years to do it that way.
thank you very much,
Mike

Re: Bye Google
I don't understand it, Sitempas works just fine for us, but why do so
many people have problems with it? Many people claim their sites drop
off the map after signing up to Site Maps, but I think that's a
coincidence, nothing to do with sitemaps. Look at other forums like
WebMasterWord. or HighRnakings, they have been lit up for 2 years with
the exact same question, why other web sites are falling off the map
long before Sitemaps was around.
Our consumer advocate BridalTips.com site dropped off the map over a
year ago after enjoying 2 years of being in the top 10 for all our
diamond buying related keyords. Still has not recovered, in spite of
the fact that we do everything by the book, we write for humans, 3000
one way incoming links, all our pages PR=5 or 6. , we play clean but I
don't blame it on Sitemaps.
On the contrary sitempas was intrumental in helping us zero in on some
housekeeping issues that we were unaware of prior to signing up:
What would be nice is if Sitemaps employees would allow a way for
seemingly trustworthy sites like ours to sign up to a $100 analysis
where they tell us why suuplemental sites, and doorway pages outrank
our legit site. That would make Sitemaps much more useful to
legitemate web site operators like us.
1) Our 404 was not pointing to a 404 page, it was redirecting to the
home page. Makes sence, but Google prefers to see a 404 pop up a real
Page Not Found and issue a real 404 server
resposnse.
2) Sitemaps is useful in telling me when they crawled our site last,
and when they downloaded my robots file last, so I don't hae to go onto
forums and whine about "why has Gogole not crawled my sit eyet?"
3) Tells me pages that are getting errors, and gives me more control
over pages getting indexed.
So all these guys lcaiming their site dropped of from signing up to
Sitemaps? I thinkg they ar ejsut falling through Google's poorly tuned
algorithm code, jsut like my site for over a year, and that was a year
before I signed up to sitemaps.

You never declare it. There's no "var" statement for it anywhere in your
code. MSIE doesn't like you giving a value to a variable that has no
"var".

Re: Final Observation "Sitemaps"
True, true, I didn't pause to figure out what the links are. The first
one may have wanted to be an actual page, I dont know. Still, you owe
it to yourself to weed all of this out.
Yahoo Sitebuilder sounds like a piece of crapola, if you want my
opinion. You can do better than that with just about any webpage editor
residing on your own pc and an ftp program. But then you can't blame
any of it on Yahoo Sitebuilder ;-)

John:
Many thanks. As I said, I'm new to this. I just figured out how to use
the Console. Fixed the problem you mentioned, the console led me to the
next....
In the meantime, I found an example from the messages that will work,
except it's for XML rather than text, and it has numbers up to 99,
which is better then A-J for me.
http://www.geocodezip.com/basic8l.asp?filename=example_number.xml
If I can figure out how to use the XML data rather than TXT, I'll be
all set.

43 or 44 I think it was 43 indexed a couple of days ago. Went to 18
after putting on sitemap. took it off back to 23, then 28, then 23,
then 25. I have dumped the supplemental duplicate pontiac page, but
Google has not yet. One shows cache in may, suppliment shows July 10,
they must really like that page.

I see that the markers variable is mentioned before it is declared but
don't know how to find a way around it, just as with the map variable
being local to the load function, what can you propose?

Icons with letters; data from text file
Hi:
I am new to javascripting and the google maps api, but am trying to
learn.
I am attempting to specify locations on a map drawn from a text file,
similar to this:
http://www.econym.demon.co.uk/googlemaps/examples/map9.htm
But I would like for the icons to have letters in them, like this map:
http://www.google.com/apis/maps/documentation/iconclass.html
I have successfully achieved the first instance, with my locations and
text file.
I'm having trouble with the letters, though.
Here's my attempt to merge code from both examples. It loads the map,
and draws the table, but fails to populate with data and icons.
http://kubuildingtech.org/maptest6.html
Can anyone help me figure out what I'm doing wrong?
Thanks!
mistersmed

Hear, hear!
I will add to this that no amount of SEO effort which does not also
include correcting the code to have it perfectly valid, no amount of
effort to get backlinks, paid ads, whatnot will ever truly succeed if
the site is poorly made to start with.
You will be wasting your money and time if you only focus on SEO in
that way. Like painting over rust without removing it first.

Well, that is the one validation error. I see you didn't correct it.
If you corrected it and it didn't work maybe you have the wrong
verification code altogether .
Do you have a sitemap on that site? I found no sitemap.xml file, so
maybe it's got another name.
Your site is not returning a 404 for a missing file. This would be a
problem I imagine during the verification process.

I think they are interchangeable. the items in the [] are options. I
don't think order matters. the options are seperated by comma. the
R=301 tells it that it's a 301 redirect. L is for "Last" rule..

That may well be popular for simple pages, but for pages that use the
Google Maps API it makes a lot more sense to use the AJAX-like
philosophy of exchanging the minimum amount of information with the
server. GXmlHttp or GDownloadUrl can be used to send and receive such
information, simply use the URL of a server script rather than the URL
of a static file. If only a small amount of data has changed, then an
AJAX-like interaction can happen almost immediately, whereas there could
well be a considerable lag if a new version of the whole page is
returned since the API code needs to be reloaded and all the static
parts of the page need to be redrawn.

Ive seen the posts about last mod dates. I may need some schooling but
Im not sure how based on the quote above this refers to sitemaps. Maybe
I missed some posts.
Based on the above quote
Difficulty% = Number of pages
ie. 1 of 100 is alot easier than 1 of 1 million.

APIv2 currently uses a newer map tile set than APIv1. In most places the
maps are the same, but a few updates have been made here and there.
Unlike the satellite imagery, which can look very different when a new
photograph is taken, sections of the map graphics only get redrawn when
the information portrayed is changed.
E.g. these are the current v1 and v2 map tiles for where I live:
http://mt3.google.com/mt?n=404&v=ap.5&n=404&x=16108&y=10543&zoom=2
http://mt3.google.com/mt?n=404&v=ap.6&n=404&x=16108&y=10543&zoom=2

Re: Using API on commercial websites
No, there is no way to pay Google. Not yet, anyway, although it's
possible they will react to public demand.
The map should not be used on a site which is only available for paying
subscribers. It appears to be ok to ask people to pay to see data
(markers, lines etc) which you have placed on the map with the API. As
long as the map is freely available, there are very few restrictions
about the type of site: Google do say they don't want to advertise drug
dens and gambling houses, for example.
